When searching for a client this morning - Borders Boot Camp (keyword: Weight Loss Scotland) we found something intriguing. Google places/maps now integrating outside of local results and integrating in it's very own organic searches - resulting in a powerful mix of organic search results, Google images and Google Local/Places.
Why is this such a good move for Google? Simple. It's making searching even better, even more visual and even more powerful. Now when searching for something in a particular location we do not only click a link, but we can click the images, see the maps to plan routes to the destination and even prioritise the results based on the closest to you.
Think of the possibilities this has with smartphones? Forget apps like UrbanSpoon and Maps on the IPhone, all you will need is the Google app>>search>>locate>>GPRS based on organic search results. Whether it's a restaurant, a hotel or a garage for the next MOT - Google will make the process effortless.
The thing here is not that it's just pure genius, but it's pure class. In a total, league of it's own. What does this mean for SEO? Will Google factor in optimisation of Place listings in order for you to rank Geographically?
Watch this space.
